There is no nonstop flight from the United States to Chennai, so every business class flight to Chennai includes at least one connection, most often in Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, London or Frankfurt. The best-timed itineraries take about 19 to 22 hours in total from New York, Washington, Chicago or Los Angeles, and most of them land in Chennai in the middle of the night. Flyer Club business flights to Chennai start from $2,768* round-trip, about 24% below the published fare.

Chennai Business Class at a Glance

  • Nonstop flights from the US: none. Every business class trip to Chennai includes at least one connection.
  • Main connecting hubs: Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, London, Frankfurt, Hong Kong and Singapore all have nonstop flights to Chennai.
  • Total travel time: about 19 to 22 hours from the US on a well-timed one-stop itinerary.
  • Arrival time: itineraries through the Gulf hubs and Europe land in Chennai between about 2:30 and 3:30 a.m. local time; the Hong Kong routing arrives shortly before midnight.
  • Airport: Chennai International Airport (MAA); international flights use Terminal 2, about 20 km (12 miles) from the city center.
  • Flyer Club fare: from $2,768* round-trip in business class, against a published fare of $3,646 for the same itinerary.
  • Market price: published round-trip business class fares from the US start at about $3,000 and average close to $4,900.
  • Cheapest and most expensive months: April is the low season, with fares about 9% below the annual average; December is the peak, about 11% above it.
  • Entry: US citizens need an Indian e-Visa, arranged online before departure.

Routes to Chennai: Which Hub to Connect Through

For US travelers, seven hubs with nonstop flights to Chennai International Airport (MAA) matter most. For a business class flight to Chennai, the hub you choose decides three things: how long the trip takes, which business class seat you sleep in on the long leg, and what time you land.

HubAirlineHub to ChennaiUS airports with a nonstop to the hub
Doha (DOH)Qatar Airwaysabout 4 h 35 min12, including New York, Washington, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Seattle, Los Angeles
Abu Dhabi (AUH)Etihad Airwaysabout 4 h 15 minNew York, Washington, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston
Dubai (DXB)Emiratesabout 4 h 5 min12, including New York, Newark, Washington, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Seattle, Los Angeles
London (LHR)British Airwaysabout 11 h 30 minmost large US airports
Frankfurt (FRA)Lufthansaabout 10 h 15 minEast Coast and Midwest
Hong Kong (HKG)Cathay Pacificabout 5 h 30 minSeattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, New York, Boston
Singapore (SIN)Singapore Airlinesabout 4 h 30 minNew York, Newark, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle

The Gulf hubs are the default for most travelers: a long flight to Doha, Abu Dhabi or Dubai is followed by a short hop of about four hours, whether it is Qatar Airways from Doha to Chennai, Etihad from Abu Dhabi or Emirates from Dubai to Chennai. London and Frankfurt reverse the pattern, with a shorter Atlantic crossing and then a 10 to 11 hour overnight flight: British Airways from London or Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Chennai. On the Gulf routings, check the aircraft on the final sector before you book: it is only a four-hour flight, and the business class seat on it does not always match the one on the long leg.

Air India offers a different option: a nonstop to Delhi or Mumbai, then a domestic flight to Chennai. The nonstops are limited: Air India flies to Delhi from New York (JFK), Newark and San Francisco, and to Mumbai from New York (JFK) and Newark, while United serves Delhi from Newark and American from JFK. On any of these, you clear Indian immigration and customs at the first airport, so allow a longer connection.

Flying to Chennai from Your US City

Travel from the US to Chennai is concentrated in a handful of metro areas. The table below shows, for each of them, which Chennai hubs you can reach nonstop from your home airport.

FromChennai hubs reachable nonstopAirlines on the long legTypical total travel time
Dallas (DFW)Doha, Dubai, Hong KongQatar Airways, Emirates, Cathay Pacificabout 21 hours
Chicago (ORD)Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Hong KongQatar Airways, Etihad, Emirates, Cathay Pacificabout 20-21 hours
San Francisco (SFO)Doha, Dubai, Singapore, Hong KongQatar Airways, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacificabout 21-22 hours
Atlanta (ATL)Doha, Abu DhabiQatar Airways, Etihadabout 21 hours
Seattle (SEA)Hong Kong, Doha, Dubai, SingaporeCathay Pacific, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Singapore Airlinesabout 19-21 hours
Boston (BOS)Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Hong KongQatar Airways, Etihad, Emirates, Cathay Pacificabout 19-20 hours
New York (JFK / EWR)Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, SingaporeQatar Airways, Etihad, Emirates, Singapore Airlinesabout 19-21 hours
Washington (IAD)Doha, Abu Dhabi, DubaiQatar Airways, Etihad, Emiratesabout 19-21 hours
Houston (IAH)Doha, DubaiQatar Airways, Emiratesabout 21 hours
Los Angeles (LAX)Doha, Dubai, Singapore, Hong KongQatar Airways, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacificabout 21-22 hours

British Airways via London and Lufthansa via Frankfurt add a second European option from most of these airports. Two routings are worth knowing about: from Dallas, Qatar Airways flies nonstop to Doha, so Dallas to Chennai on Qatar is a single connection; and from Seattle the Hong Kong routing is the shortest way to Chennai from the US West Coast, 11 h 40 min to Hong Kong and then 5 h 30 min to Chennai, which beats the Gulf hubs from that corner of the country.

What Business Class to Chennai Costs

Round-trip business class fares from the US to Chennai published on the major search engines start at about $3,000, and the average is close to $4,900. Routings through the Gulf hubs usually price lowest; itineraries through London cost more.

Cheap business class flights to Chennai come from fares that are not sold on public websites. Flyer Club works with consolidator and contract fares, which is why our business class to Chennai starts from $2,768* round-trip against a published fare of $3,646 for the same itinerary, about 24% less. Three factors move the price of cheap business class tickets to Chennai the most:

  • Dates. December is the most expensive month and April the cheapest.
  • Hub. Doha and Abu Dhabi routings usually come in below London.
  • Party size. Some of our lowest fares require two or more passengers on the same booking.

When to Fly Business Class to Chennai

Two things set Chennai's fare calendar: the weather and family travel from the US.

  • December to January: peak season. US holidays, Chennai's Margazhi music and dance season and the Pongal harvest festival in mid-January fill premium cabins. December is the single most expensive month, running about 11% above the annual average. Book three to four months ahead.
  • October to December: the northeast monsoon, which brings Chennai most of its annual rain, with the heaviest downpours in November.
  • April to June: the hottest months, peaking in May. April is also the low season for business class to Chennai, about 9% below the annual average.
  • June to August: US school holidays bring demand back despite the heat.

Landing in Chennai at 3 a.m.

Most one-stop itineraries from the US, everything routed through the Gulf hubs or Europe, land at Chennai between about 2:30 and 3:30 a.m. local time, and the return flights leave around 4 a.m. The Hong Kong routing is the exception: it arrives shortly before midnight. Plan the hotel around it: book from the night before your arrival so the room is ready when you get there, and on the way home keep the room until you leave for the airport.

  • Terminal. International flights use Terminal 2, the New Integrated Terminal Building. Domestic flights use T1 and T4.
  • Visa. US citizens need an Indian e-Visa arranged online before departure. There is no visa on arrival for US passport holders.
  • Getting into the city. The airport is about 20 km (12 miles) from the city center. The Metro Blue Line starts at the airport and reaches Chennai Central in about 40 to 45 minutes, but it does not run in the middle of the night. After a 3 a.m. landing, a pre-booked car or the prepaid taxi counter is the practical choice; the drive takes 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Connecting within India. There is no airside transfer between the international and domestic terminals: you collect your bags, exit and check in again. Allow at least three hours.

Chennai vs Other Indian Gateways
